About Karan Hayward, MAICD

Karan is the current CEO of the Language Center and has held that position for over 30 years. She has seen the corporation come from small beginnings of fighting for every dollar to now be the recipient of millions of dollars of funding.

Karan has led many committees and boards over the past 40 years, as chairperson of the Barkly Region Chamber of Commerce, Barkly Bush fire council, Patta TC Council Local Authority, Barkly Region Alcohol reference group and many more. Was appointed to the Barkly Shire Council as Alderman. Nominated for local hero Australia Day awards NT in 2018.

Improving herself and those around her is ongoing and always training/studying to obtain better skills to lead her team and organisation to be better and service her community. Her management qualifications are numerous. Project management, governance, financial, policy and procedures are areas she strives to maintain at a high quality.

The start of a New Year brings a much-needed change to the PAK rule book

PAK management has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to make much needed changes to our rule book, in line with keeping up with the changes within our community, and we are proud to announce that our new rule book has been ratified by the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC).

We are pleased to have our new rule book and its contents will be applicable effective immediately.

Successful Launch of 'Feed the Monster'

This past week saw our CEO, language workers, Committee members, special guests and media crew head to Canberra for the launch of the ‘Feed the Monster’ application in Warumungu.

It was a week filled with long hours of travel, late nights, last-minute changes, meetings with Senators and countless curious questions.

The official launch took place at the National Library and we were completely blown away by the number of attendees, both in person and via electronic streaming.

We had over 50 people in attendance in the lecture hall and over 65 sites tuning in electronically. We haven’t confirmed official numbers but we were told some on the sites tuning in were schools and were viewed by up to 40 plus people!

We appreciate Senator Malarndirri McCarthy - Northern Territory and Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price taking the time to meet with us during their busy schedules.

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with the The Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation (ALNF) which began way back in 2004 with Mrs. Nixon being the driving force behind the project.

We have probably said it before but we truly cannot put into words how valuable Mrs. Nixon and her extensive knowledge has been, Papulu Apparr-kari would not be as it is today if it were not for her and her total commitment to sharing the language as her mother’s taught her to do.

Thank you to everyone that helped get us here, it has been a long road but incredibly worth it and we couldn’t think of a better legacy for Mrs. Nixon, to have the languages she worked so hard on to be preserved for future generations forever.

We now look forward to completing our next language venture.

A Colourful day at Ampilatwatja School

PAK recently traveled to Ampilatwatja
last week to join the first Amazing Race and Colour Smash!

A day filled with activities and events, the day ended with a bbq, healthy fruits and salads and a banana bread, a great day that was enjoyed by all that attended!

As a surprise for the students, as they were leaving school for the day the Yellow Shirts team had a bag of special goodies to give to them.

Language Preservation talks held in Borroloola

PAK staff recently travelled to Borroloola to attend an important meeting with Borroloola Language workers groups.

The meeting was held so the Borroloola community could have an open discussion about how PAK could assist in language projects around the community, with a particular interest from the community so language can be enhanced at Borroloola School.There are big plans for Borroloola, including the completion and launch of a Garawa Dictionary, amongst other publications and resources that will be developed to for teaching and learning languages across the Gulf Region.We are excited about the things to come at Borroloola!

PAK Teams visit Stars foundation at Primary School

Our language and media teams took the opportunity to meet up with the young ladies of the Stars Foundation, to give them an oversight of all the work that goes on behind the scenes and to give the girls the first opportunity of testing out the app ‘Feed the monster’.

This app came from an idea that Mrs Nixon had many years ago, that is used as an aid to learn the Warumungu Language.

Thank you to Jemma and her team for allowing us this time, seems like everyone had a great time!
