Papulu Apparr-kari Aboriginal Corporation
is the Indigenous Language Center in Tennant Creek, Northern Territory
of Australia responsible for the preservation, maintenance, and revival
of the 16 indigenous languages of the Barkly Region. In addition we operate
a Community Development Employment Program and a media production unit
specialising in the publication of local indigenous stories as books
with audio pdf's, and DVD documentaries, along with a variety of
film and print services.
The Association has the following objectives:
- To keep our living languages alive and strong, and document
our languages no longer in common use
- To provide language services to our members and mainstream society
- To assist our members and others with interpreter and translation
services to improve our people’s well being and to improve understanding
between peoples and cultures
- To support, maintain and develop our cultures
- To use modern forms of media to promote our languages, cultures and
improve understanding
- To be a positive regional role model as an Aboriginal cultural business
- To demonstrate cultural leaderships and influence and improve understanding
at a local, regional and national level between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal
peoples
- To empower our people in our region through improved economic well
being
- To facilitate business, enterprise and economic development for our
people in our region
- To provide and support training, employment and economic opportunities
for Aboriginal people in our region
